No Quarters Required! Episode 24 – Bioshock Infinite & God of War: Ascension! 18

Hey fellow gamers and podcast enthusiasts!!! Episode 24 of The No Quarters Required! Gaming Podcast is here! Sorry for the delay, we just had a hard time getting everyone together a couple weeks ago. We are still short a man with Daze being at the hospital with his wife bringing in their newest child into the world, so send Daze a tweet or something to congratulate him. Exodus is putting in some serious overtime at his work but we managed to pull a 15 minute conversation off with him. As always you are gonna hear us chatting away on some of the latest games, including the recently released God of War: Ascension, Tomb Raider, Spec Ops: The Line, Bioshock Infinite and the Defiance Beta. It has been a long month and with that comes lots of news, so we kind of cherry picked the most interesting news stories and chatted about those.

**Note** – Looks like a small section of the podcast got lost. The show will jump from Exodus leaving the podcast to Morgan talking about a game around 1 hr and 23 minute mark, that game is Terraria.

So what are ya waiting for? Download the podcast now and get listening! What I’ve been playing: MLB 13 The Show, I just got Sleeping Dogs platinum, and I’m trying to get my NBA 2K13 one.
    Great show, haven’t played any of the recent big games, but I’ll definitely check out Bioshock Infinite.
    Congrats to Daze on the new baby!

    • Michael Fedor

      Thank you man! Yeah she was born on thursday night, which the podcast was being recorded but she came at 11:59 p.m. so on 4/4/13. Damn you get a platinum for Sleeping dogs, nice man I really liked that game.

    Wzup!
    @Exodus – Preach!!! Fighting Games are the S***!
    @Daze – Congrats!
    Playing – TTT2, DOA5, Halo 4, Walking Dead, & Gears Judgement
    Bioshock – I played the trail(PS Plus) Its very similar to the first one. As soon as I got some guns & shooting, my trail ended… :( For now, waiting for a price drop or sale.
    Gears Judgement – I had some concerns before the game release. After spending some time with game, Im impress, and People Can Fly did a good job. I like the new guns, and the gameplay is faster than Gears 3. OverRun is fun, but its tough running solo & ppl not using headsets. One small issue is readjusting to the “Shotgun Feast” since there’s no stopping power

        @draven it is a good game but not a great game like how bioshock 1 was and how it scared the shit out of you when you played. also the fact the AI will just charge you and not try to flank you as much like in the first game and even in the second game. Don’t get me wrong I do like the game and having some fun with it but until Jason reminded me about the old videos of the original gameplay that they showed. Now most of the time a game that is first shown will get better with graphics but this time they went backwards. They really dumb down some of the graphics and animations. watch both of the videos one is a ten minute gameplay and the other is a fifteen minute gameplay it will trip you out. I think if they would of put that stuff in then it would of been a ten out ten game straight across the board. Plus it would of felt like bioshock where this game to me feels like a game that is really good thats like bioshock.

          First question for ya Mike, have you finished the campaign? I’m gonna assume not, that way I won’t spoil anything for ya.
          First off, I don’t care what a game looks like during production, the video game design and production always changes during a two to three year process, it only matters what it looks like when the game is finally on the retail shelves. As I said in the show, to me the worst thing about the game are the graphics, which are still pretty good, and on the PC they are fantastic. To me the story and the environment eclipse the first Bioshock in every way, shape and form. In Bioshock, Rapture was already dead and you had to navigate through it to unveil its secrets, which yielded a fantastic story. I love Bioshock to death, but for Infinite the situation is different, it is more immersive. What I think makes Infinite so compelling is that when you arrive in Columbia the world is functional, alive, and steaming with activity. Only through story progression do you get to see Columbia start to crumble before you into a dystopic and lawless world until you reach the final conclusion. So being able to be a part of this society as it falls around you, is to me, way more fascinating than exploring an almost dead world like Rapture.
          I recently finished the 1999 mode and had plenty of scenarios where I was flanked by the enemy, but you could tell that that wasn’t a key feature they focused on. It is always about conveying the story between Booker, Dewitt, and Comstock, the gun play is just the fun game aspect to move ya from story point to story point.
          This is a game where you should slow down, read or listen to everything you can, and enjoy the world that Irrational Games has given you because there is so much consume in Columbia. I can’t wait to see what you think once you finish the story.

    Streaming games/watching others – Varies on the game. I can easily watch fighting games. I usually watch tournament streams on the weekend. Some shooters….

    • Michael Fedor

      I was talking to Vince from Blank Your Game on Wednesday and we talked about games that we watch streaming. We both came up with the same idea. We mostly watch games that we want to play to see if it might be any good. Also like injustice gods among us. Because we are not good at fighting games but we like the story that the game is doing with all of the characters.

    Hello All. Congrats to Mike on the birth of baby number two!!
    Been playing nothing but i have far cry 3 still in plastic. I have been busy moving the family out of London to a town some 60 miles away from the city. We need a bigger house because we are expecting our second child in june. Must be at least 2 good shows since the last time i was on here so hope all is well with everyone.
    Keep up the good stuff.

    • Michael Fedor

      B-ramz we miss ya and glad you are liking the shows. Also thank you about my second child Ruby, and congrats on your baby number two on the way. I didn’t know you lived in the UK Nice. Where I watch most of my shows from lol.

    • Draven71 (@Draven71)

      What’s up B-Ramz!! Glad to hear from ya! Congrats on the impending birth of your second child, that is fantastic! Hopefully you will enjoy life out in suburbs as well. I loved Far Cry 3 and hopefully you will have a great time with it as well when you finally sit down and get to play it. Is there anything else coming out/or out now that you are anxious to get your hands on? Me, I’m looking forward to Grid 2 and The Last of Us. After that, just GTA V.

  • untechsavy

    Congratulations Mike on the birth of your new child!
    Strong words Draven saying Bioshock Infinite is the best game this Gen but you play A LOT so I’ll take your word for it…
    Still waiting for my Vita to get back, delivery mix up …
    I’m looking forward to a new Metal Gear on PS4 and waiting for that Kojima space shooter game to drop in price some more, the one that came out about a month ago… I’m blanking on the name so don’t cus me out. Wish you guys (and girls?) all the best

    • Michael Fedor

      zone of the enders, I love both of those games they first one is much slower then the second but that was of the time when the game came out. Also thank you about my daughter ruby. In my mind I think bioshock is a really good game but the first one I like better.

    • Draven71 (@Draven71)

      Hey Untech!! How are ya? I’m passionate about Bioshock, if anyone that has listened to any of our podcasts should know I’m really interested in superior storytelling in videogames about almost anything else. Yeah, I love the mindlessness of a Minecraft or just blowing way things in a Battlefield or Call of Duty, but what I really look for are games that make me think about the story that they are trying to tell. For me none of them have done it better this gen then Bioshock Infinite. We’ve seen other great stories this gen and I’m not discounting them because I had a great time going through those campaigns as well. When I find a game that has a story that is compelling I tend to wipe away the other aspects of the game, Infinite’s gunplay and other mechanics are strong and fun, but not necessarily the best. Elizabeth is hands down the best AI character I’ve ever seen in a game. There is so much to enjoy with Bioshock Infinite if you take your time and consume every bit of information that the game reveals to you.
      I can’t believe you haven’t gotten your Vita back, its been a while now. I need someone to beat my Treasures of Montezuma scores!

    What Ive been playing:
    Gears Judgment- Insane Mode

    @Mike Fedor:
    Congratulations on the daughter. You didnt give us her Stats (length & weight). Yet congrats!

    Wii U:
    For the Wii U to survive they need to announce Halo 5 & the Next Call Of Duty as exclusives! Oh they cant, well, Wii U is going to die a slow death.

    PSN:
    PS4 will have a paid service just like Live. The investors saw the money M$ has made with Live. However, the service better be comparable to Live in every way.

    @Morgan Park,
    Bioshock 1 had superior control. Bioshock 1 was an exceptional game in every way. I played it on the 360. Bioshock 1 is one of the top 5 games of this generation.

    Also, YOU NEVER SKIP THE CREDITS! Especially after you beat a Halo Game. Especially on Legendary!

  • B-Ramz

    @Mike: Thanks for the congrats. Its funny that you say you watch a lot of UK tv.
    Here in England i watch mostly American tv Lol.
    @Draven Thank you also for the Baby congrats. You ask if there is anything out now or coming out that i would be anxious to get my hands on?? Ooohh just a PS4 and all the launch titles that come with it!! But before that i would like to here a lot more info about the ps4, So far tho i like what iv”e seen.
